How to Download Your Mobi Ebook File to Your Kindle or Kindle App

Exclusives and Freebies

I want to make sure everyone can get the subscriber exclusives on my site, so here is a quick tutorial if you need to get your book onto your Kindle. (Note that if you use Nook, iTunes, Kobo, Google Play or other epub reader, it is SO much easier. Basically, just email or download the free book to your device and open it. So this is only for Kindle apps and ereaders). Please let me know if you need further help! I don’t mind at all—I want you to get the books! Kindle makes it a little difficult because they’d prefer you to buy books from them, but there are many ways to get your ebook onto your Kindle.

How to download subscriber exclusive mobi ebook file to your Kindle:

There are several ways to sideload your new books on your Kindle or Kindle app.

First way for a Kindle device:

  1. Download the books onto your computer. It will generally end up in your downloads folder.
  2.  Using your USB cable, plug your Kindle into your computer.
  3. Your Kindle will show on your computer menu like a flash drive.
  4. Drill down on your Kindle from Books>documents. (There may be several other options, but you need to end up in “documents”).
  5. Drag the MOBI file (or copy and paste) from your downloads to your Kindle’s documents folder.
  6. When you disconnect your Kindle, the book will appear in your Kindle library.

First way for a Kindle app on an Android phone:

  1. Download the books onto your computer. It will generally end up in your downloads folder.
  2.  Using your USB cable, plug your Android phone with the Kindle app into your computer.
  3. Your phone will show on your computer menu like a flash drive.
  4. Drill down on your Kindle>Books>documents. (There may be several other options, but you need to end up in “documents”).
  5. Drag the MOBI file (or copy and paste) from your downloads to your Kindle’s documents folder.
  6. When you disconnect your phone, the book will appear in your Kindle library.

Another way to put your ebook on an Android phone or on a Kindle that has email capabilities:

Don’t want to plug in your computer to get the phone on your Android Kindle ap? Bypass Amazon’s protective capabilities by learning your way around your files on your phone.

  1. Find the ebook in your downloads files on your phone. (If you can’t find it, you can download ES—and see David’s comment below for another similar way to do this.)
  2. Copy it.
  3. Open your “file manager” or “file explorer.” Find your Kindle folder.
  4. Paste your ebook file there.
  5. It should show up now on your Kindle app.
  6. Need more help with this? Here is a tutorial that may help.

And yet another way for both the Kindle and phone:

  1. You can also email the MOBI file to your Kindle’s email address and it will show up like any other book.
  2. Find out your Kindle address by going to your account on Amazon’s website and click on “Manage Your Content and Devices.” Once there, click on the Settings tab.
  3. Near the bottom, under Personal Document Settings, you’ll see a list of your devices and the emails assigned to them. This email is where you’ll send the book too.
  4. IMPORTANT: Check that the email you’re sending from is on the Approved Personal Document E-mail List.
  5.  Scroll down from the personal document settings, and you will see a list of approved emails. Add the address that you will use to email the file to your Kindle.
  6. Then go to your computer or phone, attach the file and email it to your kindle. It will appear on your Kindle or Kindle app exactly as if you purchased it from Amazon.

Or avoid the Kindle app on your Android phone altogether:

  1. Go to the Play Store and download an app to read epubs.
  2. Download the epub of my book instead of the Kindle.
  3. Click on the book and it will ask you where to open it.
  4. Choose the app you just downloaded and read your book!

I’ll be posting another short tutorial soon for epub downloads, but epub readers are a lot more intuitive, so give it a try. Thank you!

Thanks for the article. Almost no one is talking about how to download 3rd Party MOBI’s to a kindle without using a computer.
    For clarity’s sake, here’s what I did.
    1. Download a File Explorer from the Kindle Store (I used ES)
    2. Download a MOBI from a 3rd party site
    3. Navigate to the downloads folder using the File Explorer
    —Cut the newly downloaded MOBI
—Navigate to the books folder and paste the MOBI

Hi Vivian. Fortunately all my books are also available on iBooks! And for the free books I give out, the epubs work for iBooks! Please let me know if you need help with them!

Are you eyes really that blue or is it contacts? Just curious.

Lol. I don’t wear contacts, and my eyes are blue, but there is a cooling filter on the photo which changed the color of the overall picture some.

You mentioned Vampires. That sounds like an Emporium project. Maybe one that gets out of hand, that they need to turn to the Renegades for help. I’m only on book 4, and I need to read 5&6 (7 already downloaded for free), so I am unable to predict which Emporium leader is close enough to 2000 and is desperate enough to start investigating the stories of Vampires to see how close to reality they are.

Lol! I love it, Jane. In my world, the Unbounded are the source of the vampire mystery, but there are rumors about where they got their abilities in the first place . . . Thanks for commenting!

under your another way for kindle and phone – I emailed some mobi files ( books) to my kindle fire address and made sure the addresses were under acceptable addresses. My books appear in the document file but not in my library like the books purchased through amazon. Do you know how I get them to appear in my book library like the other books?

Hi Gail. I sent you that box to check on Amazon, didn’t I? Was that checked? Sorry to ask. It probably was. Mine are showing up in my Kindle books AND documents that way. I think I’ll have to email Amazon and ask them. My Book Cave is going to be doing some coding on the books to see if that will automatically send them to the Kindle and not in documents. I’m really sorry about the trouble!
